Meet: Rob Barcelona

I am the Chief Investment Officer and a Senior Financial Advisor here at Fiduciary Financial Advisors.

Since my first savings account as a child to buying my first stock at 17, I have been fascinated by financial markets. Helping others navigate these markets by setting and achieving financial goals is my calling.

Having worked at various financial firms along with founding my own independent practice in 2019, I believe strongly in a fiduciary relationship with all clients.

As a level III CFA candidate, I follow the CFA institutes Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct. Click here to find out more about the CFA Institute.

Work as Chief Investment Officer:

  • Concentrated Stock Positions: Concentrated stock positions present unique opportunities for incredible wealth creation along with tremendous portfolio and behavioral risks. Utilizing a proprietary risk framework, we build a bespoke portfolio to help manage these risks and seek to maximize opportunities presented by these positions while mitigating potential risks.

  • Portfolio manager of our Michigan Municipal Bond strategy. With this strategy, we seek to maximize the after-tax yield of our clients’ accounts utilizing Michigan-based municipal bonds. We run this strategy as a customized, separately managed account depending on each client’s unique starting point and capital.

  • Manage our CIO Core Portfolio strategies that provide a disciplined, process-driven approach to multi-asset portfolio management. Focused on real diversification, consistent approach, and simplification, we seek to deliver the highest possible risk-adjusted returns within each risk sleeve of our core strategies.

Our investment philosophy

  • Process drives results

Consistency and Discipline: We employ time-tested strategies such as tactical rebalancing, tax-efficient investing, and cost-conscious investment vehicles. Continuously improving our process allows us to filter out short-term noise in favor of long-term results.

  • Pragmatism and humility

Grounded Decisions, Flexible Thinking: Successful investment requires adaptability and a clear focus on real-world results rather than rigid theories. We let time-tested data and strategies drive our thinking, not forcing confirmation of existing ideologies.

  • Simple over complexity

Clarity in a complex market: Simplicity is a cornerstone of sustainable investing. Complex strategies often lead to confusion and inefficiency. Keeping investments straightforward enables clear decision-making, minimizes risk, and enhances long-term outcomes.

Why these tenets matter

These core tenets help drive daily decision-making while keeping us focused on the long-run success of our investment strategies. Financial markets are increasingly filled with volatility, conflicting opinions, and hidden information. Having a core set of ideals helps filter out signal from noise and allows the construction of core and custom models to fulfill our clients' long-term investment goals.

Family photo of Rob Barcelona, fiduciary advisor focused on client-first investment strategies

About me:

Family is number one for me. My wife Katie and I live in East Grand Rapids with our two sons and dog Norman. You’ll find us all walking together around Reeds Lake or into town for an evening ice cream. To keep my mind focused and clear, I enjoy running or cycling around the Grand Rapids area. Throughout the year I follow Formula 1 while flying a Ferrari flag on race Sunday. Come autumn I very rarely miss watching a Michigan football game win or lose.

The five fiduciary principles I oath to follow are as follows:

1. I will always put your best interests first

2. I will act with the skill, care, diligence, and good judgement of a professional

3. I will not mislead you and provide full disclosure of important facts

4. I will avoid conflicts of interest

5. I will fully disclose and fairly manage, in your favor, any unavoidable conflicts
